Nandankanan Zoological Park in Bhubaneswar has received 58 animals belonging to 14 exotic species as a donation from the Radha Krishna Temple Elephant Welfare Trust (RKTEWT), Gujarat.
The animals were received at the zoo on September 12, 2026. The collection includes a diverse range of mammals and birds from different geographical regions.
14 Exotic Species Added
The animals received by Nandankanan include four zebras, four kangaroos, six Bennett’s wallabies, four ring-tailed lemurs, four tufted capuchins, four scarlet macaws, four blue-and-gold macaws and four green-winged macaws.
The zoo has also received four sulphur-crested cockatoos, four crowned cranes, four scarlet ibises, six meerkats, two cassowaries and four blue wildebeests.
The addition includes 10 new species, the pairing of one existing species and the infusion of new bloodlines into three species. With these additions, Nandankanan Zoological Park now houses 188 species.
Focus on Conservation and Education
The new arrivals are expected to strengthen Nandankanan’s species-diversity profile and support its conservation-education initiatives.
The animals will offer visitors an opportunity to learn about wildlife from different geographical regions, their ecological adaptations and the importance of biodiversity conservation.
Animals Under Quarantine
The newly received animals are currently under quarantine as part of the zoo’s established animal-care protocols.
They will be maintained under Nandankanan’s veterinary and husbandry systems, with emphasis on animal welfare, scientific management and proper acclimatisation.
