A disturbing video showing a group of people assaulting a young man on Platform 1 of Bhubaneswar Railway Station has gone viral, triggering widespread concern over passenger safety and the effectiveness of security arrangements at one of Odisha’s busiest railway hubs.
The incident occurred on 11 August near a contractor-run canteen. According to the Government Railway Police (GRP), the young man was allegedly in an intoxicated state, creating a nuisance, throwing items, and damaging property near the shop. Shop staff and their associates then overpowered and attacked him.
Following the circulation of the video on social media and in some media outlets, Bhubaneswar GRP registered a case and launched a formal investigation. Officials have examined both the viral footage and CCTV recordings, identifying several individuals involved in the assault. Preliminary findings suggest some of the attackers were associated with the canteen operations.
GRP has made it clear that no one is permitted to take the law into their own hands, regardless of provocation. Investigators are also looking into reports that the young man suffers from substance addiction and mental health issues.
The episode has prompted pointed questions: How could such a prolonged assault take place on a crowded platform despite the presence of GRP and Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel? Why did CCTV surveillance not trigger an immediate response?
In a press note, East Coast Railway stated that GRP has intervened and taken necessary action. The matter is under legal investigation, and the railway administration is providing full cooperation. Officials emphasised that the incident is being treated with seriousness and a complete probe will be conducted.
As the investigation continues, authorities are examining whether additional persons were involved. The episode has once again highlighted the challenges of maintaining order and rapid response in high-security railway zones, leaving many passengers uneasy about safety on the platforms.
