A cloud of controversy surrounds the MNREGA scheme in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district as former Shuliapada Block Development Officer (BDO) Anupama Ghosh has been served a show-cause notice over alleged fund misappropriation totalling Rs 11.53 lakh.
The notice, issued on June 3, cites a suspicious transfer of funds to a particular computer firm, allegedly in violation of MNREGA financial norms. Notably, this firm is already under the scanner in a separate Vigilance case. The transfer was reportedly executed without the knowledge of the block’s cashier or head clerk.
“We had serious doubts about the legitimacy of this fund transfer,” stated Dharmananda Behera, Project Director of the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA). “A committee will be formed in the coming days to investigate the transaction and determine if proper procedures were followed. So far, the responses from staff members have not clarified the issue.”
Despite being directed to respond within seven days of notice issuance, Ghosh has yet to offer an explanation. The DRDA has confirmed that further disciplinary or legal action may be pursued based on the findings of the upcoming investigation.
The case adds to growing concerns over transparency in the implementation of welfare schemes in the region. Authorities hope the internal probe will bring clarity and accountability to the use of public funds.
