Mumbai Indians (MI) secured their fifth consecutive victory, jumping three spots to claim the second position on the points table with a convincing 54-run win over the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), in Match 45 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.
MI got off to a fantastic start with their openers, Ryan Rickelton and Rohit Sharma, hitting a series of quick boundaries. Rohit smashed two consecutive sixes off Mayank Yadav’s bowling before succumbing to a slower delivery. Rickelton, however, maintained the momentum by scoring 58 runs off 32 balls, including five boundaries and four sixes, before getting dismissed off Digvesh Rathi’s bowling. Will Jacks followed shortly after, managing to hit three boundaries and a six before being cleaned up by Prince Yadav for 29 runs.
Suryakumar Yadav took on the responsibility of building the innings, striking a couple of fours and a six off Ravi Bishnoi’s final over. Despite a costly over, Bishnoi managed to end his spell by taking Tilak Varma’s wicket. Just when it seemed like LSG might gain momentum after Mayank Yadav bowled out MI skipper Hardik Pandya for just 5 runs, Naman Dhir joined Suryakumar in the middle. He found a couple of boundaries despite some early struggles, while Suryakumar sent one into the stands to complete his half-century, only to be dismissed the very next ball by Mitchell Marsh at extra cover for 54 runs off 28 balls. This inning also marked Suryakumar’s achievement of 4000 IPL runs.
Corbin Bosch made a promising start in his IPL 2025 debut, playing some impressive shots in the penultimate over. However, he threw away his wicket by hitting a catch straight into Nicholas Pooran’s hands at long-on for 20 runs. Naman Dhir scored 25 runs off 11 balls, including two fours and two sixes, finishing MI’s innings with a scoop shot for six. Mumbai Indians set a mammoth total of 215/7 in their 20 overs.
In their chase for 216, Aiden Markram began the innings with a couple of boundaries in the first over but fell to the impact substitute, Jasprit Bumrah’s, back-of-the-length delivery.
After a shaky start, Nicholas Pooran found his rhythm, launching three consecutive sixes in the final over of the powerplay. Deepak Chahar conceded 20 runs in his third over, and LSG recovered to reach 60/1.
Will Jacks turned the tide in favour of MI by taking two wickets in three balls. He dismissed Nicholas Pooran for 27 runs and sent the struggling LSG skipper Rishabh Pant back to the dugout on the very next ball.
Ayush Badoni and Mitchell Marsh attempted to stabilise the innings for LSG, scoring 10 runs off Hardik Pandya’s initial over, while Karn Sharma gave away 20 runs in his second. LSG was at 103/3 after 10 overs.
Mitchell Marsh’s promising innings ended at 34 runs after he fell to a slow and short ball in the 12th over delivered by Trent Boult. David Miller hit three boundaries over the next couple of overs, keeping LSG’s hopes alive.
The situation intensified when Trent Boult dismissed Ayush Badoni for 35 runs off 22 balls, as the youngster sliced the ball towards backwards point. Jasprit Bumrah then took three wickets in a single over, eliminating David Miller, Abdul Samad, and Avesh Kumar within five balls, leaving LSG struggling at 142/8 after 16 overs.
Ravi Bishnoi hit a couple of sixes before Corbin Bosch claimed his maiden IPL wicket by dismissing him. Trent Boult finished off the match, sending Digvesh Rathi back to the pavilion with the final delivery, bowling out LSG for 161 runs.
