Apple’s longtime Head of User Interface Design, Alan Dye, is set to leave the company after nearly two decades to join Meta. Dye, who has led Apple’s UI design team since 2015, will officially step into his new role at Meta on December 31. Apple confirmed his departure on Wednesday and announced that veteran designer Stephen Lemay will succeed him.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg shared the news on Threads, the company’s social media platform. In his statement, Zuckerberg said that Dye will lead a newly created creative studio within Meta’s Reality Labs. The studio will combine design, fashion, and technology to shape Meta’s next generation of hardware and software experiences. Dye will report directly to Meta’s Chief Technology Officer Andrew Bosworth.
“Today we’re establishing a new creative studio in Reality Labs led by Alan Dye, who has spent nearly 20 years leading design at Apple,” Zuckerberg wrote. He added that Meta aims to “elevate design across the company” by bringing together a talented team with strong craft, creative vision, and deep experience in building iconic products.
While Zuckerberg did not specify the exact products Dye will oversee, he referenced Meta’s ongoing work on AI-powered smart glasses. He emphasized that the company is entering “a new era” where glasses and other advanced devices will redefine how people connect with technology and each other.
“With this new studio, we’re focused on making every interaction thoughtful, intuitive, and built to serve people,” Zuckerberg said, highlighting Meta’s ambition to design user-centric, future-ready devices.
