A terrifying incident unfolded in Jharsuguda district on Friday night when a masked miscreant entered a house in Sarbahal Talipada and opened fire at a woman.
The victim, Biswabijayani Jena (30), wife of transporter Dhirendra Maharana, sustained a bullet injury to her thigh and was rushed to the hospital.
Reports said the assailant arrived on a motorcycle around 9:30 p.m. and entered the house while Dhirendra stepped inside to drink water. Biswabijayani was seated on a sofa when the attacker fired two shots. One bullet missed, but the second struck her right leg. The miscreant then attempted to shoot Dhirendra, but he fell to the ground in panic. Dhirendra kicked the attacker twice, forcing him to flee the scene.
Neighbours rushed in after hearing Biswabijayani’s screams. She was taken to Jharsuguda District Headquarters Hospital and later shifted to Burla Medical College as her condition worsened. Doctors confirmed she remains under treatment.
Jharsuguda Superintendent of Police Gundala Reddy Raghavendra visited the crime scene on Saturday morning along with SDPO Umashankar Singh, a scientific team, and the dog squad. Investigators collected evidence and assured that the accused will be arrested soon.
