In a decisive victory for security forces, top Maoist commander Pappu Lohara was shot dead during an anti-Maoist operation in Jharkhand’s Latehar district on Saturday.
Lohara, a most-wanted Maoist leader, carried a bounty of Rs 10 lakh and was known for spearheading violent insurgencies in the region.
The operation also resulted in the elimination of another Maoist, Prabhat Ganjhu, who had a ₹5 lakh reward on his head. In a further setback for the Maoist movement, 24 additional members surrendered, significantly weakening their presence in Jharkhand.
Authorities have hailed the mission as a “big achievement.” According to IG Operations Amol V Homkar, the Maoist formations have now been reduced to a small area, forcing their retreat from major strongholds. A recovered INSAS rifle and an injured JJMP member in custody signal continued investigations into rebel activities.
With security forces maintaining pressure on Maoist factions, this encounter marks a turning point in Jharkhand’s fight against left-wing extremism.
