Naveen Patnaik, Leader of the Opposition in Odisha and president of the Biju Janata Dal, on Tuesday urged both the state and central governments to take urgent steps to ensure the safe return of Odia citizens currently stranded in the Middle East.
Speaking to reporters outside the Odisha Legislative Assembly in Bhubaneswar, Patnaik expressed concern about the safety of thousands of Odia workers living in the region.
“I understand that there are lakhs of Odia people stranded in Middle Eastern countries. I request the governments of Odisha and India to take immediate steps to ensure they return to their homes in India,” Patnaik said.
Concerns Rise Amid Escalating Middle East Conflict
Patnaik’s appeal comes amid escalating tensions in the Middle East following joint military strikes by the United States and Israel on Iran.
The conflict, which began on February 28, has intensified in recent days, raising concerns for Indian expatriates working across Gulf nations and neighbouring countries in the region.
Thousands of Odia Workers in Gulf Countries
A large number of migrant workers from Odisha are employed in Middle Eastern countries in sectors such as construction, hospitality, healthcare, and services.
With the conflict entering its 11th day, concerns have grown among families in Odisha about the safety of their relatives working abroad.
Political leaders and community groups have called on authorities to monitor the situation closely and initiate evacuation plans if required.
Call for Coordinated Government Response
Patnaik urged both the Government of India and the Government of Odisha to coordinate efforts to ensure the well-being and safe return of Odia citizens affected by the conflict.
He stressed that the priority should be the safety of Indian nationals and timely assistance to those stranded in the region.
