Central Notifies New Chief Justices For 4 High Courts

New Delhi: Justice Subhasis Talapatra has been appointed as the Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court by President Droupadi Murmu.

According to a notification, Orissa High Court judge Justice Subhasis Talapatra has been appointed as the Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court consequent upon the retirement of present Chief Justice S Muralidhar on August 7, 2023.

Notably, Justice Subhasis Talapatra was sworn in as Judge of Gauhati High Court on November 15, 2011. On the establishment of a separate high court for Tripura in 2013, he opted for it as his parent high court. He was transferred as Judge of Orissa High Court in June 2022.

The Central Government through the Ministry of Law and Justice on Wednesday notified the appointment of Chief Justices for four High Courts – Kerala, Orissa, Telangana and Gujarat. Minister of State for Law and Justice, Arjun Ram Meghwal informed about the development in a tweet.

Accordingly, Karnataka High Court judge Justice Alok Aradhe has been appointed as the Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court.

Justice Sunita Agarwal, judge of the Allahabad High Court, has been appointed as the Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court.

Justice Ashish J Desai, acting Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court, has been appointed as the Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court.

The Government also issued a notification of the transfer of Justice P Sam Koshy, Judge of Chhatisgarh High Court to Telangana High Court.

The Centre Government has cleared the names on the basis of a recommendation made by the Supreme Court Collegium.

On July 5, the Supreme Court Collegium headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud and comprising Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Sanjeev Khanna had recommended the appointment of the judges above as the Chief Justices of the respective High Courts.
