Jharsuguda Police have arrested five youths and detained three minors for recording and uploading Instagram reels featuring sharp, lethal weapons to create panic.
The crackdown was executed under ‘Operation Netra’, a targeted initiative launched by the district law enforcement to monitor digital threats and curb social media crime.
The five arrested adults have been identified as Sagar Bhainsa (22), Subham Chhanchhan (21), Bikas Bhainsa (24), Bikas Pradhan (21) and Sameer Soreng (22).
The three other involved individuals—all juveniles—have been detained at the Town Police Station for further processing.
Acting on intelligence, police teams conducted raids across several locations in Jharsuguda. During the operation, officers seized two sharp knives used in the videos, along with the mobile phone used for recording the viral content.
Issuing a strong warning, Jharsuguda Superintendent of Police (SP) Gundala Reddy Raghavendra emphasised that social media platforms are meant for showcasing creative talent, not for glorifying crime or displaying dangerous weapons. He further stated, “Under Operation Netra, we are maintaining strict surveillance over online activities. Whether online or offline, strict legal action will be taken against anyone attempting to breach public peace or instil fear among citizens”.
A case has been registered at the Jharsuguda Police Station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Arms Act. Further investigations are currently underway.
