In a delightful display of culinary diplomacy, Japan’s Ambassador to India, Mr. Ono Keiichi, was left thoroughly impressed by Odisha’s traditional cuisine, particularly the beloved **Dalma**, during a high-profile event in the state.
The occasion was the announcement of a joint venture between JSW and Japan’s JFE Steel on April 24 in Rengali, Sambalpur. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi was present when Ambassador Ono joined the programme. As part of traditional Odia hospitality, the Ambassador was served authentic local dishes. While he appreciated the entire spread, it was the humble yet flavourful **Dalma** — a wholesome lentil-vegetable preparation — that truly won his heart.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Ambassador Ono shared his experience with genuine enthusiasm:
> “Enjoyed #Dalma in #Odisha😋 Delicious, and a wonderful reflection of Odisha’s rich culinary culture!
> ଧନ୍ୟବାଦ ଓଡ଼ିଶା🙏✨”
The post quickly drew attention, highlighting the universal language of food in bridging cultures.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi promptly responded with warmth and gratitude on his official X handle:
> “Delighted to see you enjoying the flavors of Odisha, Ambassador Ono San! Dalma is the heart of our kitchen, and we are honored by your kind words. May our bond continue to grow over many more such meals. Ono San, Arigatou Gozaimasu! 🇯🇵🤝🇮🇳”

In his detailed reply, the Chief Minister emphasised that Dalma is far more than just a dish — it is a symbol of Odisha’s rich culture and legendary hospitality. He expressed hope that such cultural exchanges would further strengthen the longstanding friendship between Odisha and Japan.
Dalma holds a special place in Odia households. Made with dal (lentils) and a variety of seasonal vegetables, tempered with a unique spice mix, it represents simplicity, nutrition, and the essence of Odia culinary heritage.
This heartwarming interaction comes at a time when Odisha is actively deepening industrial and cultural ties with Japan. The JSW-JFE Steel project itself is a significant milestone in economic collaboration. Moments like Ambassador Ono’s genuine appreciation for Dalma add a personal, human touch to these growing relations.
As the Chief Minister noted, such shared experiences of food and culture are powerful bridges that make international friendships not just stronger, but also sweeter — one bowl of Dalma at a time.
