Police detained the prime accused in the murder of an engaged woman from Jagatsinghpur, Odisha. The suspect, believed to be the deceased’s lover, was caught in Jamshedpur.
Investigators linked the crime to a strained relationship and financial dispute. The victim, 24-year-old Sasmita Das, had been in a close relationship with the accused for five years. He purchased land near her house and promised to transfer it in her name.
Family members revealed that Sasmita had borrowed several lakhs of rupees and handed the money to him for construction. Police found that some of his funds were deposited in her bank account. Before her engagement, he demanded the money back, sparking a heated argument.
Officers suspect that this financial conflict led to the murder. On April 20, between 8 and 8:30 p.m., Sasmita spoke on her phone before leaving home. Call records confirmed she was talking to the accused. Police believe he called her to the market, took her to a secluded area, and killed her.
Her body was discovered later that night in a field near Pakanpur. After the post-mortem, police handed the body to her family and began verifying if sexual assault had occurred.
Sasmita had been engaged just a day earlier, on April 19, at a temple in Dhuanpari village. The accused dropped her home that morning. Police continue interrogation to uncover the full sequence of events.
