Amid escalating tensions in West Asia, Israeli media reports have claimed that Alireza Tangsiri, the naval chief of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), has been killed in a targeted strike.
According to reports citing Israeli officials, the strike allegedly took place in Bandar Abbas, a key port city in southern Iran. However, neither the Israeli government nor Iranian authorities have officially confirmed the claim so far.
Unconfirmed Strike Amid Ongoing Conflict
An Israeli official, quoted by media outlets, suggested that Alireza Tangsiri was targeted due to his strategic role in Iran’s naval operations, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz—a critical global oil transit route.
The development comes amid the ongoing conflict involving Iran, Israel, and the United States, which has already seen multiple high-profile casualties.
Pattern of Targeted Strikes
If confirmed, Tangsiri’s death would add to a series of reported targeted strikes against senior Iranian figures since late February. Earlier reports have also claimed the deaths of key Iranian officials, including Ali Larijani and Esmail Khatib.
The conflict has intensified significantly following reports of joint US-Israeli strikes that allegedly resulted in the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei—a development that, if verified, would mark a major escalation in the region.
Who Is Alireza Tangsiri?
Alireza Tangsiri has served as the Commander of the IRGC Naval Forces since 2018. He has played a central role in shaping Iran’s maritime strategy, particularly in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz.
Notably, similar reports about his death had surfaced earlier in January 2026 following a blast in Bandar Abbas. However, those claims were later denied by Iranian state media, which confirmed that he was alive at the time.
Awaiting Official Confirmation
As of now, the reported killing remains unverified. Analysts caution that conflicting claims and misinformation are common during active conflicts, and confirmation from official sources is essential before drawing conclusions.
