Tanya Tyagi, an Indian student at the University of Calgary, has passed away under unclear circumstances, the Consulate General of India in Vancouver confirmed on Thursday.
The Consulate expressed its condolences in a post on X (formerly Twitter), saying,
“We are saddened by the sudden demise of Ms. Tanya Tyagi, an Indian student at the University of Calgary. The Consulate is in touch with authorities and will provide all required assistance to the bereaved family. Our heartfelt condolences & prayers are with her family and friends.”
So far, Canadian authorities have not issued an official statement regarding the cause of her death. Meanwhile, an unverified social media post claims that Tanya may have suffered a fatal heart attack on June 17. The post has also appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for help in repatriating her body to India, mentioning that Tanya was a resident of Vijay Park, Northeast Delhi.
Tanya’s sudden demise has sparked grief and concern across platforms, particularly among the Indian student community in Canada.
A Growing Pattern of Distress Among Indian Students Abroad
This tragedy follows a series of troubling incidents involving Indian students overseas. Earlier this year, Sudiksha Konanki, a 20-year-old student and US permanent resident, went missing while vacationing in the Dominican Republic. Her case remains unresolved.
The Indian diaspora has increasingly called for stronger safety measures, faster consular response, and support for grieving families, as such incidents continue to surface.
