Authorities have confirmed the death of Vikram Mubayi, an Indian‑origin PhD student at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), who went missing during a solo hiking trip in California’s Big Pine Lakes area over the weekend.

Mubayi’s body was recovered from Inyo National Forest after a two‑day search operation led by Inyo County Search and Rescue and the California Highway Patrol. He last contacted his family around 8:30 pm on August 1, sharing GPS coordinates from the trail. When he failed to return or make further contact, his family reported him missing.

Investigators have not released details about the cause of death, but officials said there is no indication of foul play. The circumstances remain under investigation.

About Vikram Mubayi

Born and raised in Hong Kong, Mubayi was described by his family as a “fairly experienced hiker.” In a self‑written biography for the student‑led nonprofit Illini 4000, he said his mother introduced him to hiking and tennis “pretty much as soon as I learned how to walk.”

Before joining UCSB, Mubayi graduated from the University of Illinois Urbana‑Champaign (UIUC) in 2022 with a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering. He worked as a research assistant at the Burke Laboratory and as a teaching assistant.

At UCSB, his research focused on biological methods to break down plant waste and plastics, aiming to develop sustainable alternatives to petroleum. His colleagues and mentors described him as a passionate researcher and outdoor enthusiast.

The UCSB community has expressed deep sorrow over his death, remembering him as a bright scholar whose love for nature matched his dedication to science.
