India has welcomed the reported ceasefire between Iran and Israel after nearly two weeks of escalating conflict, while reiterating its deep concerns over the long-term security and stability of the West Asian region.
Following reports from Iranian state media and confirmation from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu — who accepted a US-brokered ceasefire proposal announced by President Donald Trump — tensions appear to have eased after 12 days of missile exchanges. Iran launched six waves of attacks, while Israel responded by striking a radar site near Tehran before halting further operations.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said,
“We remain deeply concerned about sustained regional security and stability. However, we welcome the reports of a ceasefire and the role played by the US and Qatar in facilitating it.”
India, which maintains strategic partnerships with both Iran and Israel, has consistently urged restraint and a return to diplomatic channels.
“There is no alternative to dialogue and diplomacy in resolving the multiple conflicts in the region,” the MEA added. “India stands ready to play its part in supporting peace efforts.”
The conflict has had direct implications for India. With over nine million Indian nationals residing in the region — and critical energy interests at stake — New Delhi has been closely monitoring developments. Nearly 3,200 Indian nationals have already been evacuated from both countries amid safety concerns. Iran hosts around 10,000 Indians, mostly students, while over 32,000 live in Israel.
India notably distanced itself from a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) statement condemning Israel, choosing instead to pursue a balanced diplomatic approach.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently spoke with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, emphasizing India’s concern over the escalation and the urgent need to restore peace through diplomatic dialogue.
As the guns fall silent — at least for now — India remains committed to contributing to regional peace and protecting its strategic and human interests in West Asia.
