India Issues Advisory for Seafarers Taking Jobs on Black Sea Vessels Amid Rising Security Threats

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has advised Indian nationals to exercise extreme caution before accepting jobs on commercial vessels operating in or transiting the Black Sea, citing the deteriorating security situation and a rise in missile and drone attacks in the conflict-hit region.

The advisory comes after five Indian nationals lost their lives in separate incidents involving commercial ships since April 2026.

MEA Warns of Escalating Risks in Black Sea

In its advisory, the MEA said the security environment in the Black Sea and adjoining maritime areas remains highly volatile due to the ongoing conflict.

According to the ministry, commercial vessels navigating the region continue to face significant threats from missile and drone strikes.

“Since April 2026, there has been an increase in attacks on commercial vessels, resulting in the tragic loss of five Indian lives,” the ministry stated.

Seafarers Asked to Assess Risks Before Accepting Jobs

The MEA urged Indian seafarers and job seekers to carefully evaluate the security risks before accepting employment on ships operating in the affected region.

The ministry advised prospective crew members to gather complete information from employers, recruitment agencies, and ship operators before joining any assignment.

Safety Measures Recommended by the Government

The advisory recommends that Indian nationals verify several key aspects before signing employment contracts, including:

  • The vessel’s planned route and ports of call.
  • Existing onboard security arrangements.
  • Insurance coverage for crew members.
  • Emergency evacuation and response procedures.
  • Potential risks associated with operations in conflict-affected waters.

The government stressed that informed decision-making is essential while considering assignments in high-risk maritime zones.

Advisory Issued Amid Ongoing Regional Conflict

The latest advisory follows a series of attacks on commercial vessels in the Black Sea linked to the continuing regional conflict. Shipping routes in the area have witnessed increased security challenges in recent months, prompting governments to issue travel and employment advisories for maritime workers.

Indian authorities have urged citizens to remain vigilant and stay informed through official government advisories before accepting overseas maritime assignments.
