India Buying Oil from Diversified Sources Amid West Asia Tensions, Says MEA

Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has said that India is continuing to buy oil from diversified sources to ensure energy security for its 1.4 billion people.

The statement comes amid rising tensions in West Asia and disruptions in global supply chains.

MEA Spokesperson Highlights Strategy

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said:

  • India is sourcing oil from multiple countries
  • Decisions are based on global market conditions
  • The priority is to meet the needs of a large population

He emphasised that diversification helps India remain resilient during geopolitical instability.

Concerns Over Strait of Hormuz

India is also in active discussions with several countries regarding the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial global oil transit route.

Key concerns include:

  • Safe return of Indian ships
  • Protection of maritime trade routes
  • Ensuring uninterrupted oil supply

Shipping disruptions in the region have raised global alarm.

Impact of West Asia Conflict

The ongoing tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran have significantly affected shipping through the Gulf region.

Since over 85% of India’s crude oil is imported, and much of it passes through the Strait of Hormuz, any blockade directly impacts the country’s energy supply.

Modi–Trump Discussion on Crisis

Narendra Modi recently spoke with Donald Trump regarding the situation in West Asia.

During the conversation, both leaders:

  • Reviewed bilateral ties
  • Discussed regional stability
  • Stressed the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open and secure

Safety of Indian Ships and Seafarers

Officials confirmed that:

  • No Indian-flagged vessels reported incidents in the last 24 hours
  • Indian seafarers in the Gulf region are safe
  • Operations at Indian ports remain normal

This provides some reassurance amid global uncertainty.
