India and Thailand have elevated their bilateral relations to a Strategic Partnership during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official visit to Thailand from April 3-4, 2025.
The announcement was made during the 6th BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok, following discussions between PM Modi and his counterpart, PM Paetongtarn Shinawatra.
Acknowledging the historical and cultural ties between the nations, the Strategic Partnership aims to strengthen cooperation across various domains, including defense and security, trade and investment, connectivity, education, health, culture, and people-to-people exchanges. The partnership underscores a mutual commitment to fostering peace, stability, and prosperity in the region.
Key highlights include boosting bilateral trade, which reached $15 billion in 2023-24, enhancing connectivity through projects like the India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway, and promoting collaboration in renewable energy and electric vehicles.
The leaders also reaffirmed their dedication to a free, open, and resilient Indo-Pacific region, emphasizing ASEAN centrality and cooperation under frameworks like BIMSTEC and the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative.
The partnership marks a new chapter in India-Thailand relations, paving the way for deeper collaboration, shared opportunities, and joint responses to global challenges.
