In a significant development amidst heightened tensions, India and Pakistan have agreed to a ceasefire, effective from 5:00 PM Indian Standard Time on May 10, 2025.
The announcement was made by India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri following a telephonic conversation between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of both nations.
This ceasefire marks a critical step towards de-escalation after a series of military confrontations, including India’s recent “Operation Sindoor,”. The ceasefire agreement stipulates that both sides will halt all firing and military actions across land, air, and sea borders. Further discussions are scheduled for May 12, 2025, indicating a continued diplomatic effort to address the underlying issues.
Moments earlier, US President Donald Trump and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio claimed that India and Pakistan have agreed to a full and immediate ceasefire after talks mediated by the US.
Pakistan Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar also tweeted, “Pakistan and India have agreed to a ceasefire with immediate effect…”. However, he also did not mention any US mediation.
However, MEA announced that stoppage of firing & military action between India and Pakistan was worked out directly between the two countries. The Pak DGMO initiated the call this afternoon after which discussions took place and understanding reached. There is no decision to hold talks on any other issue at any other place.
As the world awaits the outcome of the upcoming DGMO talks, the fragile peace hangs in the balance, with hopes that this could be a stepping stone towards lasting stability in the region.
