The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has joined forces with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay to introduce Project Udaan—an AI-powered translation platform that facilitates academic learning in multiple Indian languages.
This initiative aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasises multilingual education and equal learning opportunities. Project Udaan utilises cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Optical Character Recognition (OCR) to seamlessly translate complex technical and academic content while preserving formatting and readability.
Speaking at the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing event, Professor Ganesh Ramakrishnan of IIT Bombay highlighted that the project is tailored to meet the linguistic diversity of India’s learner base. “Project Udaan is a step towards eliminating language barriers and ensuring that education remains inclusive and accessible,” he stated.
IGNOU’s vast repository of study materials will soon be available in various regional languages, benefiting students from rural areas and non-English-speaking backgrounds. The collaboration also supports national initiatives like Digital India and Bharat Bhasha, which promote Indian languages in the digital space.
Experts predict that Project Udaan could revolutionise India’s higher education sector by integrating AI into the learning process, making academic resources more accessible to millions of students nationwide.
