The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued Orange and Yellow warnings for Odisha as heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds are set to impact multiple districts between June 17-20, 2025.

The Southwest Monsoon has advanced further, intensifying weather conditions across the state.

According to the latest IMD bulletin, a low-pressure area over Southwest Bangladesh and Gangetic West Bengal continues to persist, expected to move west-northwest and intensify over the next 24 hours. This system is likely to trigger extremely heavy rainfall in select regions.

IMD has placed Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Mayurbhanj, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Balasore, Bhadrak, and Jajpur under Orange Warning, urging residents to take necessary precautions. Meanwhile, several other districts, including Cuttack, Kendrapara, Ganjam, and Koraput, have been placed under Yellow Warning, with anticipated thunderstorms and lightning activity.

With squally weather conditions expected along the Odisha coast, fishermen are strictly advised not to venture into the sea between June 17 and 18 due to rough sea conditions and wind speeds reaching 40-50 kmph.

The IMD has also warned of localised flooding, traffic disruptions, tree uprooting, and damage to infrastructure in affected areas. Residents are advised to stay indoors, avoid unnecessary travel, and unplug electrical appliances during intense weather activity.

Authorities have urged people to keep a watch on weather updates, avoid waterlogged areas, and seek shelter during thunderstorms. Farmers are advised to protect crops and regulate harvesting activities judiciously to prevent damage.

As monsoon conditions intensify, residents must remain vigilant and follow official advisories to ensure safety.
