Odisha is bracing for widespread rainfall and thunderstorms as a cyclonic circulation forms over the South Andaman Sea.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned that the system extends up to 1.5 km above sea level and may intensify into a low-pressure area around May 12 or 13.
The IMD forecast indicates that the developing system could bring heavy rain across the state, affecting nearly 20 districts. The department issued a yellow warning for 30 districts, cautioning residents about lightning and thunderstorm activity.
Meteorologists said the cyclonic circulation might strengthen further, leading to continuous rainfall across coastal and interior Odisha. However, IMD clarified that the chances of the system turning into a cyclone remain low.
Districts likely to experience thunderstorms include Khordha, Cuttack, Puri, Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, and Ganjam. Authorities advised people to stay indoors during lightning and avoid open areas.
The upcoming low-pressure formation is expected to trigger moderate to heavy showers, bringing relief from the prevailing heatwave. Farmers and residents welcomed the forecast, anticipating improved soil moisture and cooler conditions.
