Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya faced another setback in a difficult IPL 2026 season after being fined and handed a demerit point following MI’s defeat to Kolkata Knight Riders.
The all-rounder was found guilty of breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during the match, adding to Mumbai Indians’ disappointing campaign.
According to the IPL statement, Pandya violated Article 2.2 of the Code of Conduct, which relates to the misuse of cricket equipment or ground fixtures during a match. The incident took place on the fourth ball of the 10th over in KKR’s innings when Pandya forcefully knocked the bails off the stumps while returning to his run-up.
The IPL confirmed that the Mumbai Indians skipper accepted the offence and the punishment imposed by the match referee. As a result, Pandya was fined 10 per cent of his match fee and received one demerit point.
The punishment came on a night when Mumbai Indians suffered their ninth defeat of IPL 2026. The five-time champions have struggled throughout the season despite beginning their campaign with a long-awaited opening-match victory. Consecutive defeats against Delhi Capitals, Rajasthan Royals, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Punjab Kings pushed the team into crisis early in the tournament.
Hardik Pandya’s return match after a break was expected to inspire a turnaround, but MI once again failed to deliver under pressure. Injuries and poor form have further complicated Mumbai Indians’ campaign. Rohit Sharma has battled fitness concerns, Suryakumar Yadav has struggled for consistency, and Jasprit Bumrah has not produced his usual wicket-taking impact.
Pandya’s own numbers have also remained below expectations. The MI captain has scored only 172 runs and picked up four wickets in nine matches this season, increasing scrutiny around his leadership and performances.
The latest defeat also highlighted Mumbai Indians’ alarming decline under Pandya’s captaincy. This marks the second occasion in just three seasons that MI have lost four matches in a row under his leadership. In IPL 2024, Mumbai Indians finished at the bottom of the table, and this season they are again fighting to avoid ending last.
Hardik Pandya returned to Mumbai Indians in 2024 after leading Gujarat Titans to IPL success. However, replicating that success at MI has proven difficult. While reports suggest the franchise management still backs Pandya as captain, speculation around leadership changes continues to grow as the season slips away.
With only one match remaining, Mumbai Indians now face serious questions about the future direction of the team and whether major changes could arrive ahead of IPL 2027.
