The Gujarat Titans (GT) secured a stunning four-wicket victory against the Mumbai Indians (MI) in a rain-interrupted last-ball thriller at the Wankhede Stadium.
The win, achieved via the DLS method, propelled GT to the top of the IPL 2025 standings with 16 points, overtaking Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on net run-rate.
Mumbai Indians set a target of 156 after struggling to build momentum following early wickets. Despite a fiery 53 off 35 balls from Will Jacks and a steady 35 from Suryakumar Yadav, MI faltered, losing five wickets in just 26 runs to finish at 155/8.
GT’s chase saw initial stability through skipper Shubman Gill (43 off 46) and Jos Buttler (30 off 27), but rain interruptions twice halted their progress. Jasprit Bumrah’s magic with the ball put MI back in contention, dismissing Gill with a peach of a delivery. GT, needing 15 runs off the final over, found themselves in a tense finish.
With two runs needed off the final ball, a missed run-out opportunity by MI skipper Hardik Pandya handed GT a breathtaking victory. Rahul Tewatia and Arshad Khan ensured the Titans crossed the finish line, clinching a win that will be remembered for years.
After the match, Hardik Pandya admitted that his team fell short with the bat: “We were 20-25 runs below par. No-balls cost us dearly. In T20s, those errors are crimes. We fought hard, but those fine margins made the difference.”
Meanwhile, Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill acknowledged the unpredictability of the rain-hit contest: “It felt like a Test match at times! Maintaining rhythm wasn’t easy, but tight wins like these matter in the IPL.”
GT’s triumph reshuffles the IPL leaderboard, while MI faces pressure in their playoff push.
