New Delhi: In a significant move to address the escalating air pollution crisis in India, Google has unveiled a new AI-driven feature named Air View+. This innovative solution aims to provide real-time, hyperlocal air quality data to both government agencies and the general public, empowering them with actionable insights to tackle air pollution effectively.
Air View+ leverages the power of Google AI in collaboration with local climate tech firms, including Aurassure and Respirer Living Sciences. These partnerships have facilitated the deployment of a comprehensive network of air quality sensors across more than 150 Indian cities. These sensors continuously monitor various air quality parameters such as PM2.5, PM10, CO2, NO2, Ozone, and VOCs, along with temperature and humidity, providing minute-by-minute updates.
The data collected by these sensors is analyzed using advanced AI algorithms to generate detailed air quality insights. This information is then made available on Google Maps, allowing users to access real-time air quality data for their specific locations. The feature is particularly beneficial for vulnerable populations, such as children and the elderly, who can take preventive measures like wearing N95 masks or limiting outdoor activities based on the air quality information.
Google’s initiative also supports government agencies responsible for environmental monitoring and urban planning by providing them with granular air quality data. This enables the creation of custom air quality dashboards, helping urban planners identify pollution hotspots and implement corrective actions. The tool has already shown promising results in pilot projects conducted in cities like Navi Mumbai, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, and Greater Chennai.
Yael Maguire, VP & GM of Google Maps Platform & Google Earth, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “As India continues its incredible growth momentum, it’s crucial we also mitigate risks like air pollution that could slow it down. Air View+ is designed to provide the necessary data to take targeted action against air pollution, improving health and environmental awareness across the country”.
With the launch of Air View+, Google aims to equip both citizens and authorities with the tools needed to combat air pollution, contributing to a healthier and more sustainable future for India.
