Former Deputy Speaker of the Odisha Legislative Assembly and veteran political leader, Bibhuti Bhusan Singh Mardaraj, passed away a private hospital in Bhubaneswar. He was 70.
A scion of the royal family of Khandapada in Nayagarh district, Mardaraj had been receiving treatment for cardiac-related ailments. His health deteriorated over the past few days, leading to his demise early Wednesday morning.
Mardaraj was a prominent figure in Odisha’s political landscape during the 1980s and 1990s. A three-time Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Khandapada constituency, he was elected in 1980, 1985, and 1995. Throughout his career, he held several key posts, including Minister and Deputy Speaker of the Odisha Assembly.
His passing has drawn widespread mourning across the state, particularly in his home constituency of Khandapada. Political leaders across party lines have paid tribute to Mardaraj’s legacy and dedicated service to Odisha.
Expressing deep grief, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi took to social media to pay homage.
“I am deeply saddened to learn about the demise of Shri Bibhuti Bhusan Singh Mardaraj, former Minister in the Odisha Government and former Deputy Speaker of the State Assembly. I pray before Lord Jagannath for the eternal peace of the departed soul and extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family. Om Shanti,” the CM wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
Mardaraj is remembered for his leadership, simplicity, and commitment to public service. His contributions to Odisha’s legislative and administrative framework continue to be honoured by peers and the public alike.
