A 21-year-old engineering student died, and four others sustained injuries after an unexploded bomb detonated on a trekking trail near the Hanumanapuram firing range in Chennai.
Himanshu Yadav, a fourth-year Electrical and Electronics Engineering student at SRM College, kicked the object during a hike with friends. The bomb exploded instantly, killing him on the spot. Yadav, the son of Ramesh Singh from Bengaluru, suffered severe injuries to his chest, shoulder, and arm.
Four other students—Vishal Venugopal from Hyderabad, Aryan Sharma from Uttar Pradesh, Krishna Siraj Mahajan from Jammu, and Nishkas Neeraj from New Delhi—sustained serious injuries. Another student, Virat Sanjay Kumar from Meerut, escaped unhurt.
Police reported that the group climbed a hill near the firing range around 5:30 PM without permission. They travelled on three two-wheelers and discovered an iron object suspected to be unexploded ordnance. When Yadav kicked it, the device struck a rock and exploded.
Ambulances transported the injured students to SRM Hospital in Potheri for treatment. Investigators suspect the explosive originated from military firing practice in the area. Senior police officials inspected the site and registered a case.
