In a chilling incident that has once again exposed the fragile safety net in Odisha’s capital, a local trader was chased down and mercilessly beaten by miscreants in the Kharvel Nagar area on Tuesday evening.
The victim, 45-year-old Gopinath Sahu, a resident of the locality, was allegedly targeted near Sriya Chowk, right next to the red light area in Malisahi.
According to his account, a group of men pursued him before launching a vicious assault that left him with serious injuries. The attackers fled after the brutal beating, but Sahu identified them as locals from the Malisahi area.
Kharvel Nagar Police Station personnel rushed to the spot, rescued the injured trader, and immediately shifted him to Capital Hospital for treatment. He remains under medical care.
Police have registered a case and launched a full-fledged investigation. Raids are underway to identify and arrest the accused.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the neighbourhood and raised fresh questions about rising insecurity in the city, especially around areas known for red-light activities.
