Raising serious questions over the transparency of the electoral process and the independence of the Election Commission of India (ECI), four major Left parties held a colourful rally and demonstration along Mahatma Gandhi Marg on Friday.
Organised jointly by the Communist Party of India (CPI), Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)], CPI(ML) Liberation, and the All India Forward Bloc, the protest highlighted widespread concerns regarding the deletion of eligible citizens’ names from voter lists during recent summary revision drives.
Addressing the gathering, senior state leaders emphasised that the right to vote is the fundamental pillar of Indian democracy. They asserted that voter registration, revisions, and deletions must be entirely transparent, impartial, legally sound, and open to public verification.
“No eligible citizen should be deprived of their voting rights under the pretext of administrative errors, software glitches, document ambiguities, or opaque procedures,” political speakers urged.
Protesters highlighted claims that over the last ten months, Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had raised objections at least 14 times concerning voter registration, deletion, restoration, SIR processes, and electoral data management. The leaders stated that growing concerns over the centralisation of electoral databases and data handling require answers backed by total transparency and public audits, rather than routine press statements.
Key Demands Put Forward by the Left Front:

Removal of the CEC: Immediate dismissal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, identifying him as the key accountable figure, followed by an independent and impartial probe into the allegations.

Halt SIR: An immediate stop to the current SIR process.

Voter Restoration: Urgent reinstatement of all eligible voters whose names were wrongfully excluded.

ECI Independence: Restoring the independent and transparent operational standards of the Election Commission.

Supreme Court Guidelines: Strict implementation of Supreme Court directives regarding the appointment of Election Commissioners.
The demonstration was spearheaded by key state leadership, including Dr Prasant Kumar Mishra (State Secretary, CPI), Suresh Chandra Panigrahi (State Secretary, CPI-M), Yudhishthira Mahapatra (State Secretary, CPI-ML Liberation), and Jyoti Ranjan Mahapatra (State General Secretary, Forward Bloc). Senior leaders such as Janardan Pati, Asish Kanungo, Jayanta Das, N. Narayan Reddy, and Bijay Jena, along with hundreds of party workers, also joined the mobilisation.
Closing their addresses, leaders stressed that the credibility of the electoral system is not merely a party issue, but a critical matter for the survival of Indian democracy and the Constitution. They announced plans to channel the upcoming birth anniversaries of Bhagat Singh and Mahatma Gandhi into nationwide mass movements dedicated to protecting democratic rights, inviting trade unions, farmers, youth, students, women’s organisations, and civil society to join the cause.
