A sudden explosion injured six people while they were making firecrackers for the upcoming Lankapodi festival in Korada village under Nuagaon police limits of Nayagarh district.
The blast occurred inside a house where the group was preparing fireworks for Ram Navami celebrations.
The contractor who took charge of supplying firecrackers worked with his family and labourers when the explosion happened. The blast severely injured two women and a minor, while three others sustained serious burns. Doctors at Nayagarh District Headquarters Hospital said the child suffered nearly 90 per cent burns, and two others sustained around 80 per cent.
Police reached the site immediately and began investigating the cause of the explosion. Preliminary findings suggest mishandling of explosive materials during firecracker packing triggered the blast. Officers are verifying whether the firecrackers were being made legally and if safety norms were ignored.
