An eight‑year‑old girl drowned in a pond at Budarapara village under Raighar police limits in Nabarangpur district, leaving the community in shock.
The victim, Santoshini Majhi, daughter of Lagudhar Majhi, had gone to bathe in the pond with friends on Thursday afternoon. While playing, she slipped into deeper water and could not swim back. Her friends immediately alerted villagers, who rushed to rescue her.
Santoshini studied in Class III at the local school. At the time of the incident, her father was away at a nearby market, and her mother was busy with household chores. Villagers pulled her out and took her to Raighar Medical Centre, where doctors declared her dead.
The tragedy cast a pall of grief over Budarapara village. Police seized the body and conducted a post‑mortem before handing it over to the family.
