In a significant move to bolster the transparency and robustness of India’s electoral system, the Election Commission of India (ECI) organised a landmark national roundtable conference at Bharat Mandapam.

This event, the first of its kind in 26 years since 1999, brought together key stakeholders from across the country to discuss reforms and coordination in election management.

Chaired by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, the conference featured Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Dr Vivek Joshi. Representatives from all 36 states and Union Territories, including State Election Commissioners (SECs) and Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs), participated actively. The primary objective was to enhance synergy between the central ECI and state-level bodies, thereby reinforcing the federal framework through collaborative efforts.

The discussions emphasised the integration of modern technology into electoral processes. A special presentation highlighted the recently launched digital platform ‘ECINET’, showcasing its potential to streamline operations and improve efficiency. Technical experts delved into the transparency and security features of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), addressing common concerns and outlining measures to ensure their integrity.

Additionally, the conference focused on rectifying inaccuracies in voter lists and adopting innovative techniques to make them more precise and reliable. This initiative aims to foster greater public trust in the democratic process.

From Odisha, State Election Commissioner Madhusudan Padhi and Chief Electoral Officer R S Gopalan joined the deliberations. They contributed insights on various electoral issues and shared plans for the upcoming urban and panchayat elections in the state, aligning with national goals for fair and efficient polls.

This roundtable underscores ECI’s commitment to evolving electoral practices in line with technological advancements and federal cooperation, setting the stage for more inclusive and secure elections nationwide.
