In a decisive move to curb the growing menace of online money gaming, the Indian Parliament has passed the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025.
The legislation, enacted on August 21, aims to shield citizens—particularly youth and middle-class families—from addiction, financial ruin, and mental health crises linked to predatory gaming platforms.
The Bill categorises the online gaming sector into three segments: e-sports, social games, and online money games. While e-sports and educational games are promoted for their skill-building and cultural value, online money games—whether based on chance or skill—are now banned nationwide.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw revealed that over 45 crore Indians have been negatively impacted, with losses exceeding ₹20,000 crore. The Bill empowers the government to block unlawful platforms, prohibit financial transactions, and penalise offenders with up to five years imprisonment and ₹2 crore in fines.
A new Online Gaming Authority will oversee game classification, registration, and grievance redressal. The Bill also supports training academies, awareness campaigns, and safe digital platforms for constructive gaming.
By balancing innovation with regulation, India aims to foster a safer digital environment while strengthening its global leadership in ethical tech policy.
