Donald Trump has sparked fresh debate over US foreign policy after suggesting that he would prefer to take control of Iran’s oil resources amid the ongoing conflict.
Speaking at the White House during the Easter Egg Roll event, Trump said that while his political base supports his actions, many Americans may not fully agree with his long-term strategy.
“If it were up to me, I would like to keep the oil. But I don’t think people in the United States would understand,” he stated.
Trump’s Business-Driven Approach to War
Trump emphasized that his perspective is shaped by his background as a businessman. He suggested that controlling oil resources could be financially beneficial for the United States.
“I am a businessman first,” he said, adding that such a move could generate significant economic returns.
He also referenced past US actions in Venezuela, highlighting how partnerships there enabled access to large quantities of oil for refining and use.
Support and Concerns Within Republican Base
While Trump claimed that his “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) supporters back his decisions, he acknowledged growing sentiment within the Republican base for ending the conflict.
He noted that prolonged wars often lead to fatigue among citizens, even when initial support is strong.
Escalating Tensions With Iran
The remarks come amid heightened tensions between the US and Iran, particularly over the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump issued a strong warning to Tehran, urging it to reopen the vital shipping route or face severe consequences.
He also reiterated his stance on Iran’s nuclear ambitions, stating that the country must not be allowed to develop nuclear weapons.
War Timeline and Strategic Outlook
Trump claimed that the US has already significantly weakened Iran within a short span of the conflict and suggested that rebuilding efforts could take years.
“We could leave right now, and it would take them 15 years to rebuild,” he said.
Despite this, he indicated a desire to continue operations until US objectives are fully achieved.
