US President Donald Trump could visit India in the early part of 2027, according to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who said preparations are underway following recent high-level discussions between Washington and New Delhi.

If the visit takes place, it would mark Trump’s first trip to India since his February 2020 visit to New Delhi, Agra and Ahmedabad.

Rubio Signals Progress on Presidential Visit

Speaking to IANS, Rubio said planning for the proposed visit is linked to growing engagement between the two countries.

He also said he intends to visit India himself before the end of 2026.

“We had a great meeting with the Prime Minister at the G7. We are hoping to finalise a trade deal. We are in the last few inches of getting it done, and it is very positive. I look forward to returning before the end of the year and setting up a presidential visit in the early parts of next year,” Rubio said.

Trade Deal Nearing Completion

Rubio indicated that negotiations on a bilateral trade agreement are in their final stages.

According to him, both governments remain optimistic about concluding the deal, which could become one of the key outcomes of the recent diplomatic engagement.

He also said the two countries are expected to participate in another Quad meeting in the near future as strategic cooperation continues to deepen.

Trump’s Last India Visit

Trump last visited India in February 2020 during his first presidential term.

The visit included meetings in New Delhi, a stop at the Taj Mahal in Agra and the Namaste Trump event at Ahmedabad’s Motera Stadium, where thousands of people attended a public reception.

US Ambassador Highlights Modi-Trump Relationship

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor also referred to the recent meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in France.

According to Gor, the discussions covered several important issues, including defence cooperation.

He added that additional announcements related to bilateral cooperation could be made in the coming months.

“The relationship between the President and the Prime Minister has always remained strong. Every time the two leaders speak, important progress follows. Our goal is to maintain regular engagement and identify opportunities that benefit both countries,” Gor said.

India-US Partnership Continues to Expand

The proposed presidential visit comes at a time when India and the United States are working to strengthen cooperation across trade, defence, strategic affairs and the Indo-Pacific region.

If confirmed, Trump’s visit would represent another major milestone in bilateral relations and could coincide with the announcement of a new trade agreement and additional strategic initiatives.
