DK Shivakumar Moves to Defuse Karnataka Cabinet Crisis After Ramalinga Reddy’s Resignation

Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has moved quickly to contain political tensions after senior Congress leader Ramalinga Reddy resigned from the state cabinet, expressing dissatisfaction over the allocation of ministerial portfolios.

Addressing the issue on Friday, Shivakumar assured party workers and supporters that discussions were underway to resolve the matter and restore stability within the newly formed government.

“There is nothing to worry about. Ramalinga Reddy is a great friend and a respected senior leader. We will sort out the issue and make everything right,” Shivakumar said while responding to questions from the media.

Why Did Ramalinga Reddy Resign?

Ramalinga Reddy announced his resignation just days after being sworn in as a minister in the Karnataka government.

According to reports, the veteran Congress leader was unhappy with the portfolio assigned to him. Reddy had reportedly sought the Bengaluru Development portfolio but was instead given charge of the Major and Medium Irrigation Department.

The decision triggered dissatisfaction within the senior leader, who later announced his resignation while citing concerns over the portfolio allocation.

Shivakumar Says Talks Are Underway

In an effort to prevent the issue from escalating, Chief Minister Shivakumar said he had already begun discussions with Reddy and other party leaders.

He acknowledged that the Congress MLA had sought a different ministerial responsibility and indicated that efforts would be made to address his concerns.

“Ramalinga Reddy is my colleague and one of our senior-most leaders. He expressed his concerns regarding the assigned department. I will personally speak to him and ensure that the matter is resolved,” Shivakumar said.

Congress Faces Early Challenge in New Government

The resignation has emerged as one of the first major challenges for the Shivakumar-led government, which assumed office only recently.

Political observers believe the development highlights the delicate task of balancing ministerial aspirations within a large party where several senior leaders expect key portfolios.

While Congress leaders have attempted to project unity, the resignation has sparked discussions about internal dissatisfaction and cabinet management within the new administration.

Senior Leader Remains Important to Congress

Despite stepping down from the cabinet, Ramalinga Reddy remains one of the Congress party’s most experienced leaders in Karnataka politics.

Over the years, he has held several important ministerial positions and continues to enjoy significant influence within Bengaluru and other parts of the state.

Party insiders believe the Congress leadership will work to ensure that differences are resolved quickly to prevent further political complications.

Portfolio Allocation Sparks Debate

The controversy centres around the distribution of portfolios announced shortly after the formation of the new cabinet.

Several ministers retained key departments from previous administrations, while others were assigned new responsibilities.

Reddy’s dissatisfaction reportedly stemmed from missing out on the Bengaluru Development portfolio, considered one of the most influential positions in the state government due to its role in urban planning and infrastructure development in the capital city.

Congress Leadership Focused on Damage Control

With the opposition closely watching developments, Congress leaders are expected to intensify efforts to reach a compromise.

The party leadership appears determined to prevent the issue from overshadowing the government’s early agenda and administrative priorities.

Shivakumar’s public assurance that he will “make everything right” signals the leadership’s intention to find a mutually acceptable solution.

What Happens Next?

Political observers will closely monitor discussions between the chief minister and Ramalinga Reddy over the coming days.

Whether the senior Congress leader returns to the cabinet or a revised arrangement is worked out remains uncertain. However, the swift response from Shivakumar indicates that the party is keen to resolve the dispute before it develops into a larger political challenge.

For now, the Karnataka government remains focused on maintaining unity while addressing concerns raised by one of its senior-most leaders.
