Actor and environmental advocate Dia Mirza has responded to criticism over her recent statement that “patriarchy caused the climate crisis,” offering a detailed explanation of the connection between gender inequality and environmental degradation.
The actor’s remarks sparked widespread debate on social media, with many users questioning how patriarchy could be linked to climate change. Addressing the controversy, Dia shared a video message and an extensive note on Instagram, reaffirming her position and explaining the reasoning behind her comments.
Dia Mirza Explains Her Stand
According to Dia Mirza, climate change is not solely an environmental issue but also a crisis rooted in inequality. She argued that patriarchal systems have historically concentrated power and promoted the exploitation of natural resources and vulnerable communities.
“Climate change is often spoken about as an environmental crisis. But it is also a crisis of inequality,” Dia wrote.

The actor highlighted discussions from her series All About Her, where she and environmental journalist Arati Kumar-Rao explored how economic structures built around extraction and unchecked consumption contribute significantly to climate change.
According to Dia, systems that prioritize profit over sustainability continue to undermine both environmental conservation efforts and advocacy for gender equality.
She also pointed out that women and girls, particularly those living in vulnerable communities, often face the earliest and most severe consequences of climate change. These impacts include water shortages, food insecurity, displacement, and loss of livelihoods.
Despite being disproportionately affected, women remain underrepresented in many environmental policy and decision-making spaces, she noted.
