An IndiGo flight en route to Srinagar encountered severe turbulence due to a sudden hailstorm on Wednesday, leading to moments of panic among passengers.

The pilot had sought permission from Lahore Air Traffic Control to momentarily enter Pakistan’s airspace to avoid the storm but was denied access, sources revealed.

The aircraft, carrying over 220 passengers—including a five-member delegation of Trinamool Congress MPs—faced intense turbulence and ultimately landed safely in Srinagar. The incident is now under investigation by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

Videos shared on social media depict terrified passengers praying as the aircraft shook violently. Journalist and MP Sagarika Ghose, onboard during the ordeal, described it as a “near-death experience,” praising the pilot’s efforts to ensure a safe landing.

IndiGo Airlines has assured passengers that the affected aircraft will undergo thorough maintenance before resuming service.
