A shocking incident from Delhi has sparked outrage after a 30-year-old woman was allegedly abducted and gang-raped inside a moving sleeper bus in northwest Delhi’s Rani Bagh area. Police have arrested the bus driver and conductor in connection with the case.
According to investigators, the woman, who works at a factory in Mangolpuri and lives in Pitampura with her family, was returning home late Monday night when the incident took place near the B-block bus stand in the Saraswati Vihar area.
Police said the survivor had travelled part of the route in an e-rickshaw before continuing on foot. As she approached the bus stand, a sleeper bus reportedly stopped nearby. The woman told police that she asked a man standing near the vehicle about the time. He allegedly gestured for her to come closer before forcibly pulling her inside the bus.
The survivor alleged that two men sexually assaulted her inside the moving bus while it travelled several kilometres towards Nangloi. Investigators said the bus later stopped near Nangloi Metro station, where the woman was allegedly abandoned by the accused.
After managing to contact the police, officers reached the location and shifted the survivor for medical examination at Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital. A First Information Report (FIR) was registered under gang rape and other relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.
Police have identified the accused as driver Umesh and conductor Ramendra. Both were arrested and later sent to judicial custody. Investigators have also seized the Bihar-registered sleeper bus and are examining CCTV footage from multiple locations along the route to reconstruct the sequence of events.
Forensic teams inspected the bus and collected evidence from inside the vehicle. Police officials stated that curtains covering the sleeper bus windows may have prevented outsiders from noticing what was happening inside.
The case has reignited concerns over women’s safety in public transport and the monitoring of interstate buses operating in the national capital. Social media users and activists have demanded stricter background checks for transport staff, increased surveillance and stronger night-time security measures for women commuters.
The investigation is ongoing, and police are continuing to gather digital and forensic evidence linked to the case.
