In a thrilling operation that brought relief to anxious villagers, forest officials successfully captured a massive 16-foot-4-inch saltwater crocodile that had been terrorising the Jarimula area for nearly two years.

The giant reptile had become a nightmare for locals after it entered a private pond about 500 meters from the Bank of Baroda in Jarimula market two years ago and dragged a woman to her death.

Forest teams then trapped the crocodile from the nearby canal and released it into the river inside Bhitarkanika National Park. However, the determined animal returned and was frequently spotted floating in the canal near the busy market, sparking widespread panic and repeated complaints to the forest department. Despite multiple attempts, officials had failed to recapture the elusive predator—until today.

Led by Kanika Range forest personnel Yashobant Behera, along with Rajnagar Ranger Forester Bijay Kumar Patra and Forest Guard Trideep Pradhan, a team of eight forest staff launched a coordinated operation this morning. They stretched nets across both sides of the canal to block the crocodile’s escape routes.

Sensing danger, the powerful reptile tore through one net and bolted toward a nearby bill (swampy water body). In a heart-pounding chase, the brave team sprinted after the fast-moving giant and skillfully cast another net over it, finally bringing the dangerous predator under control.

The successful capture has come as a huge relief for residents who had been living in constant fear of an attack, especially with the crocodile often lurking close to the market area.

The reptile will now be relocated to a safer habitat away from human settlements. Forest officials have urged locals to remain vigilant and report any unusual wildlife sightings immediately.
