In a move welcomed by passengers, the South Eastern Railway (SER) has announced that the Coromandel Express and Dhauli Express will resume operations from Howrah station starting August 25, 2025. The trains had been running from Shalimar Station for the past three years as part of efforts to decongest Howrah.
The change affects Train Nos. 12841/12842 Coromandel Express (Howrah–Chennai) and 12821/12822 Dhauli Express (Howrah–Puri). Both services will now begin and end their journeys at Howrah Junction, restoring their original route pattern.
Though no formal explanation was provided by SER, the decision reportedly follows persistent passenger complaints, especially from elderly travelers and medical patients, who found Shalimar Station less accessible. Despite phased infrastructure improvements, Shalimar continues to suffer from poor last-mile connectivity, including limited taxi and public transport options. In contrast, Howrah station offers better connectivity, facilities, and convenience.
Updated Train Timings from Howrah:
-
Coromandel Express: Departs 3:10 PM, arrives Chennai 5:00 PM (next day)
-
Dhauli Express: Departs 9:10 AM, arrives Puri 6:15 PM
This update is expected to significantly benefit regular commuters and long-distance passengers traveling for work, education, and medical needs.
Other Train Updates:
Earlier this month, the Purushottam Express (Puri–New Delhi) was shifted from New Delhi Railway Station to Anand Vihar Terminal under a Railway Board directive to ease congestion during station redevelopment. The train’s route and halts remain unchanged, continuing its 30-hour journey through key stops like Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, and Gaya.
Passengers are advised to verify their train’s departure and arrival stations before travel. Indian Railways will issue updates via SMS, station announcements, and display boards to avoid confusion.
