A Class 10 student from Bhanpur village in Nuapada district died by suicide at her home after returning from her matriculation examination.
The girl, who studied at Bhanpur High School, had appeared for her English paper at the Baleswar High School examination centre earlier in the day.
Her parents, who work outside the state as migrant labourers, had left her in the care of her grandparents. On the afternoon of the incident, her grandparents stepped out for work, leaving her alone at home. Later in the evening, they discovered her hanging body inside the house.
Police from Beltukuri station reached the spot and sent the body for post-mortem to the district headquarters hospital. Officials registered an unnatural death case and began an investigation.
The cause behind the girl’s decision remains unclear. Villagers reported that another youth from the same locality, Chandan Sabar, had died by suicide just two days earlier. His funeral took place on Sunday. Locals speculated about a possible connection between the two, though police confirmed no formal complaint regarding any relationship had been filed.
The twin tragedies have sparked widespread discussions in the area, with families and community members expressing concern over rising stress among students and young people. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
