China has issued a sharp warning to nations considering trade agreements with the United States at Beijing’s expense, stressing that such moves will be met with “resolute and reciprocal” countermeasures.
The statement from China’s Ministry of Commerce comes as reports indicate that the Trump administration is urging allies to curb economic ties with China in exchange for tariff relief.
A spokesperson from the ministry described the US strategy as hegemonic politics and unilateral bullying, warning that short-term appeasement would ultimately harm all involved. Beijing emphasised that striking deals that damage China’s interests would not be accepted, and strong responses would follow.
The latest escalation follows sweeping US tariffs on Chinese imports, including a 125% reciprocal tariff and additional duties targeting various industries. China swiftly retaliated with its own 125% tariffs on American goods and filed a formal complaint with the World Trade Organisation (WTO).
Despite the growing friction, reports suggest that Washington and Beijing remain in communication, with US President Donald Trump confirming China has reached out multiple times. Meanwhile, Beijing has urged the international community to resist protectionism, warning that a return to the “law of the jungle” in global trade would be detrimental to all nations.
