Tension erupted at the District Headquarters Hospital in Malkangiri after the death of an eight‑month pregnant woman named Bandana Mandal.
Her family accused doctors of negligence and assaulted the attending physician inside the hospital premises.
Bandana fell ill on Tuesday night, and her family rushed her to the hospital after spotting a snake inside their house. They informed doctors about the suspected snakebite, but alleged that the medical team ignored their concern. The doctor reportedly allowed Bandana to return home without proper treatment.
Her condition worsened the next morning, prompting her family to bring her back to the hospital. Doctors declared her dead, triggering outrage among relatives. They questioned why she was discharged earlier and claimed that timely treatment could have saved her life.
Hospital authorities denied the allegations. The attending doctor stated that Bandana left the hospital voluntarily with her family and received all necessary medicines and care.
Angry relatives attacked the doctor following the death, creating chaos in the hospital. Police arrived quickly and restored order. Officials have launched an inquiry into the alleged medical negligence and the circumstances surrounding the death.
