Indian cinema is making waves internationally, and Sudipto Sen’s latest production, Charak – Fair of Faith, is at the forefront.

After receiving raving reviews at the Berlin International Film Festival, the film is now set to be showcased at the prestigious Festival de Cannes.

Directed by Shieladitya Moulik and produced under Sipping Tea Cinemas, Charak explores the darkly intense Charak Puja, a ritual observed in parts of Bengal. The film delves into how misguided acts performed in the name of devotion can sometimes cross the boundaries of humanity, almost becoming an evil act.

Critics at Berlin praised the film’s bold theme and compelling storytelling, with Vikram Malhotra of Abundantia Entertainment calling it “compelling, thought-provoking, and thrilling.” Other reviewers, including Alex Godfrey from Empire Magazine and Yael Kaufman from Neon Rated, highlighted its stunning visuals and intriguing premise.

Now, as Charak prepares for its Cannes screening, anticipation is at an all-time high. Positioned within the emerging folklore horror genre, the film aims to spark conversations around blind faith, inherited trauma, and the cost of silence in patriarchal societies.

With its unique narrative and strong cultural roots, Charak is shaping up to be a must-watch film for audiences worldwide.
