Panic gripped the maternity ward of Udala Hospital in Mayurbhanj district after a portion of the ceiling suddenly collapsed, narrowly missing a new mother and her newborn baby.
According to reports, the incident occurred when a section of the roof fell onto the back of the woman, who was sitting on a bed holding her infant. Both escaped without serious injuries, though the mishap caused alarm among other patients and attendants.
Witnesses said the sudden collapse triggered chaos in the ward, with families rushing out in fear. The hospital staff later cleared the debris and inspected the damaged area.
The incident has once again raised serious questions about the structural safety and maintenance of government hospital buildings. Locals and patients have demanded an immediate inspection of old hospital blocks and urgent repair work to prevent future accidents.
While the mother and child were fortunate to escape unharmed, residents warned that continued negligence could lead to a major tragedy if safety measures are not strengthened.
