The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has summoned actor and TVK chief Vijay for another round of questioning in connection with the Karur stampede case.
Officials confirmed that the fresh notice follows earlier interrogations on January 12 and 19 at the agency’s headquarters. Investigators said they have gathered material requiring further clarification from the actor.
The CBI took over the case from the Special Investigation Team (SIT) after a Supreme Court order. The probe relates to the September 27, 2025, stampede during Vijay’s rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, which claimed 41 lives and injured more than 60 people.
In October last year, the apex court directed the CBI director to appoint a senior officer to lead the investigation. It also constituted a supervisory committee headed by former Supreme Court judge Ajay Rastogi to monitor progress.
A bench comprising Justices J K Maheshwari and N V Anjaria observed that the stampede left a deep imprint on citizens nationwide. The court emphasised that the tragedy had wide ramifications and underscored the importance of protecting the fundamental rights of families who lost loved ones.
The judges stressed that public trust in the criminal justice system must be restored. They said an impartial, independent, and unbiased investigation is essential to instil confidence among citizens.
