A newborn boy was reportedly stolen from the Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) in Burla, Sambalpur on Tuesday.
A couple from Chhattisgarh lodged a complaint alleging that their baby boy was stolen by an unidentified woman from the hospital.
The family stated that an unknown woman had formed a friendly relationship with them and managed to flee with the newborn on the pretext of making the baby sleep in her lap.
Upon receiving the complaint, the hospital authorities promptly notified the Burla police. The IIC led a team to the hospital to review the CCTV footage.
Geeta Das, wife of Mohan Das from the Basan police station area of Mahasamund district in Chhattisgarh, was admitted to VIMSAR’s Gynecology and Obstetrics Department on November 24 and delivered a baby boy the day before.
The husband claimed that since her admission, an unknown woman had visited and befriended them. However, when they could not locate their baby later that afternoon, and after thorough searches, the woman could not be found.
The police were alerted and arrived at Burla Medical College to commence an investigation. The CCTV footage captured the woman exiting the hospital with the infant. The police have initiated a search to locate her.
“Four teams have been assembled for the investigation. They are inspecting vehicles at 23 border checkpoints. The CCTV footage has been distributed to the teams. We are also interrogating the infant’s parents and relatives,” stated Haresh Chandra Pandey, Additional SP, Sambalpur.
