Carlos Alcaraz made a triumphant return to grass courts on Tuesday, defeating Adam Walton 6-4, 7-6(4) at the Queen’s Club Championships.
The Spaniard, fresh off his Roland Garros victory, showcased resilience in his first match of the season on the new surface, overcoming Walton’s challenge in the second set.
Facing a late change in opponents after Alejandro Davidovich Fokina withdrew due to illness, Alcaraz remained composed. Walton posed a real threat, holding two set points at 4-5 in the second set, but Alcaraz’s precise serving and tactical play helped him recover. His drop shots proved decisive, securing the victory in an intense tie-break.
The defending Queen’s Club champion, now on a 14-match winning streak, leads the ATP Tour with 38 wins and four titles this year. He will next face Jaume Munar in the second round as he continues his quest for another grass-court triumph.
Meanwhile, American Ben Shelton suffered an early exit, losing to Arthur Rinderknech 7-6(5), 7-6(4). Despite hitting 22 aces, Shelton struggled to break Rinderknech’s serve, marking a disappointing start to his campaign.
Stay tuned as the Queen’s Club Championships continue, promising more thrilling matchups!
